What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Unlike older keys, modern car keys have chips that are specific to each vehicle. This keeps thieves from taking the key and turning on the car.

The keys can be purchased at an auto dealer or copied in a locksmith's shop. The procedure for programming the key is different for each manufacturer and involves turning the key to the on position, without triggering the engine, then removing it within a certain time period.

Transponder Codes

When a transponder is questioned it sends out an encoded signal with a four-digit code. This signal is called the SQUAWK code and is the basis for identifying aircraft on radar screens. It is also used to send specific messages to air traffic control in the case of an emergency or to alert air traffic controllers to changing weather conditions. Squawk codes can be used to communicate with ATC when the pilot is unable communicate via radio. They are vital for safe flying.

Every aircraft has a transponder, which responds to radar probes by displaying an identifier. This enables ATC to locate the aircraft on a radar screen that is busy. Transponders can be set to respond in various ways when questioned. Mode A is the only mode that transmits the code, while mode C also includes altitude information. Mode S transponders transmit more detailed information like callsigns and position. This can be useful when flying in crowded airspace.

A common sight is a small, beige box that is located under the pilot's seat in the majority of aircraft. The transponder is a tiny beige box used to transmit the SQUAWK code every time the air traffic control activates the aircraft. The transponder can be set to the 'ON', and 'ALT' or SBY (standby position) positions.

There are 63 distinct codes that can be assigned to aircrafts, although there are certain reserved codes that prohibit the use of a particular code in an area of high traffic or in emergencies.
