Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to go back to sea.

The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by forcing Lolita to perform for tourists. They push her to the limit with high-speed circles and head-first diving, expose her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. Additionally, they place her in a tiny tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her a relative and plan that would eventually take her to the open water. The plan would have included a sanctuary on Washington's west coast where she could stay for the rest of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the actual ocean, not an actual concrete tank.

Despite the ongoing health concerns of Lolita Many people believe that she could be closer than ever before to living a wild life. The new owner of Seaquarium has pledged to relocate the whale from her tank into her native waters in the Pacific.

These plans came too late to save the beloved whale, which passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney problem.
