Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

bedside rocking crib cots, also referred to as bassinets and co-sleepers, are designed to let parents sleep close to their children at night, without the risk of SIDS. However they are not suitable for use up to 6 months when your baby will need to move into a cot or moses basket.

It also comes with an option to rock manually. It was also easy to assemble and came in its own travel bag for convenient storage.

Size

Cots and cots differ in terms of size, with cots being smaller than cot beds. Cots can also convert into toddler beds. However, cots are usually only intended for children who are the age of three. If you're looking for a wooden cot, there are typically two sizes available that are large and standard both of which will convert into a cot bed/toddler beds. The larger one is a good option if you want your child to sleep in it until they reach approximately three.

MFM mom home tester Jasmine liked that this bedside cot was slightly larger than a Moses basket but not too large for the space of her baby's. It's easy to get her baby in and out for night feeding or soothing and the quality is top-notch in comparison to other cots she's encountered that feel cheap and flimsy.

Emily, another home-based tester, is thrilled by the versatility of the Maxi-Cosi lora - it is a portable, lift-off bassinet. It also is a rock. It also has an incline of reflux as well as a machine washable liner that is breathable. It was also shortlisted for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. The Lora is compatible with a South African cot mattress unlike some international or European brands. This means that you do not need to purchase a new mattress every time your baby grows. It requires a specific bedding set (60x120cm). You can find the right mattress for your cot here.

Height

When you are choosing a crib that is bedside make sure it can be adjusted to a suitable height for you. It should also be able to be lowered to a level that is not in the way so you can lift up your baby towards you to feed them at night or soothe him. This feature is particularly helpful when you are recovering from a C Section. For instance the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted to an elevation of 58cm. the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm and the Knuma huddle up to 70cm.

You should also think about the height you would like the base of your crib to be. Some moms find it is easier to lift their babies from their standard Moses baskets when the base is situated at the lowest level, while others prefer a higher height to give them greater stability. The Joie Roomie Glide is a popular option with one of our mum test subjects saying that it is easy to use with a collapsible part that you can use at the push of a button.

Be aware that a bassinet/bedside crib travel sleeper should not be used until your baby can hold their head without assistance generally approximately 6 months. This is because of the danger of inhaling suffocation. It is also important to remember that if you opt for a bassinet/bedside crib vs cot sleeper that can convert into a cot, you will need to begin removing the sides once your child is ready for this, so that they don't climb out or get out of the bed.

Design

There are a variety of styles of cribs for bedside use with a range of styles from simple to extravagant. The most luxurious models could include features like a built-in night light and a calming centre which plays music and sounds and comes with two levels of vibration to help soothe baby back to sleep, or even the swivelling base which allows you to easily get your baby's food in the right place. You can also find models that can be converted to a cot bed or toddler bed (or both) which is ideal when your child is ready to transition to a larger bed.

For example the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air, which won Bronze in the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards in the Crib, Best Cot or Moses Basket category, has an adjustable base that lets you pick up your baby and move them from one side of the crib to the other without needing to get up. This is great for new mums recovering from Caesarean births or those who have to stay in bed for prolonged periods of time. Jasmine is an MFM mum who tested this product at home, stated that it was easy to use and made it easier to reach her baby, especially after having a C-section.

Another alternative is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which was awarded Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the category of the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket. It comes with an easy-to-clean liner, reflux incline, and rocking feature. It's a bit larger than the other cribs for bed we've looked at, but it folds flat into its travel bag, so it's relatively compact when not in use.

Leya, MFM mum home tester, also praised the bedside crib's functionality. She said it was designed for parents and infants. It is very easy to move and extremely sturdy. She said that the bassinet's swivelling base was brilliant because it let you move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lower to make access easier, especially for new mums recovering from c-sections.

Safety

A large bedside cot (dokuwiki.stream)'s main safety feature is that it can easily be adjusted or moved so that parents can reach their child to feed, comfort or change his or their diaper. This is ideal for new mothers recovering from an c-section. You should look for a design which lets you lower the bed's side with a simple button press. This allows you to raise your child without having to get out of the bed. This is important, especially as your child grows and becomes more mobile. Do not add anything that may increase the risk of suffocation or injury, such as duvets and pillowcases, which can cause your baby to overheat.

The NPR of the CPSC's NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to problems with the product like gaps between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents) and enclosed openings with fabric sides (11 incidents) and consumer misassembly or missing parts (6 incidents) and miscellaneous other product-related issues (9 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC considered the possibility of adding additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For example, these products would have to meet the minimum height requirements for bassinets, or at the very least, the maximum height requirements for the rail that is lowered. However the CPSC determined that these requirements are not practical or effective in reducing the number of incidents in which infants were trapped between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed.

The majority of the reported incidents in the NPR included bedside sleepers with multiple uses that could be converted into different modes like bassinets and play yards. A number of commenters suggested that the CPSC include in the proposed rule an alternative option for multi-use bedside sleepers that would enable them to meet the minimum side-height requirement of bassinets by using an attachment that is removable and can be connected permanently or removed when the product is not being used as an actual bassinet.

The Commission will be examining these comments when deciding on the final rule which is expected to be released in November of 2021.
