Item upgrading allows players to improve their weapons and gear by adding new affixes that boost its base stats or adding additional perks. To upgrade an item, the player has to have it in their inventory, as well as access to the kiln.

Typically items that have weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a more powerful base while items with strong bases such as eth titans aren't affected in their stats following being upgraded.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be added to weapons, armors, trinkets, and gathering tools. They can be used as an attribute bonus, or extra effect, while the equipment is being used. They can be bought from vendors, found in loot, dropped by enemies or received as a reward from missions or chests. Some upgrades additionally have special cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a specific level to upgrade.

To upgrade an item of armor, the user must select it and then click on the Upgrade button in the toolbar. This will display on the right-hand side of the screen a preview of the expected upgrade stats and the necessary component or materials.

There are three types: universal upgrades (which include gems), prefix upgrades, and suffix upgrade components. Universal upgrades, such as gems, are able to be used on any kind of equipment. They provide a smaller bonus than upgrade components that have a specific type limitation. Infusions are only placed in ascended gear or legendary equipment, are the same as jewels but provide larger bonuses and cannot be used in any other type of equipment. Suffix upgrades can be added to gathering tools. They will add the suffix at the end of the item's name. For instance adding a Glyph would make a Staff wrapping of Minor Vigor into a Canthan staff wrapping of Minor Vigor.

In the case of upgrades for gathering tools, if a player replaces one glyph by another the previous glyph will be returned to the inventory. However replacing any other upgrade component can destroy it, with the exception of the inscriptions that can be swapped.

Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade process differs from the previous versions in a few important ways. Gear is now divided into tracks and items can be upgraded a specific number of times before they are "leveled out." The cost for upgrades increases with each level up however, the materials needed don't increase as much. This allows players to focus their efforts on a handful of essential items and maximize their impact, instead of spreading the upgrade costs across multiple items.

This will allow the item to receive new upgrade components, and have a greater chance of success. This bonus is known as Artisan’s Energy and it resets to 0 if the upgrade fails, or increases if the upgrade succeeds.

Once a piece is upgraded to its maximum level, it will be able to gain affixes which will increase its features. The number of affixes that are available will depend on the item's class. For example an uncommon or exclusive weapon with a standard base will have only two affixes, whereas a legend armor will have eight affixes.

Each upgrade will require an amount of Flightstones and crests to complete based on the current level of the item upgrades and the slot it's in. Weapons usually require more Flightstones than other equipment.

If an item doesn't attain its maximum level, the NPC offers players the option to transfer it to another character and re-infuse the item with a different set or upgrades. This process can take up to two hours and will cost the same amount of materials but will have less chance of success.

To determine the height of a building engineers use a level to compare the measurement with an established reference point, like a benchmark, or the ground's elevation. This is referred to as a "level-loop." It involves taking readings with the backsight rod and level, then turning the level and making the foresight rod reading. This method helps ensure that buildings are constructed to a high level of accuracy and safety.

Rerolling

Rerolling refers to the process of changing the upgrade components of an item. It is a very important element of the game that can increase the damage, strength or other characteristics. This can be done through the menu for items or by pressing the Reroll button of an upgraded item. Rerolling items can be expensive and should be done sparingly.

Reroll tokens are earned by recycling upgraded items. These tokens can be used to upgrade item the original item or another similar item. Recyclable items come with an indicator that indicates the degree of upgrade. The amount of level that has been filled is based on the rarity and cost of upgrading of the item.

In the past, certain upgrade items were affixed with priority that made them easier to roll for than other. This meant that you'd receive the stats that mattered most to your build often than other. This included stats like the armor's total armour, thorns and diminished duration due to control or the weapons' bonus attack speed and crit strike chance.

This was changed with the recent patch. Priority affixes were removed, and all upgrades have the identical chance of rolling each statistic. This can be a good or a bad thing, depending on your needs and expectations from your equipment.

Each upgraded item upgrader can also be equipped with a special bonus that increases the item's power by a specific percentage or flat value. These bonuses are added to regular affixes. The more you upgrade a product, the greater the chance of receiving an exclusive bonus.

The game also comes with various sets which grant a set bonus when three or more upgraded items from the same set are installed on a unit. This is a good method to give the character more power without spending a lot of money.

Many players opt to reroll their equipment and weapons, especially in the early stages of the game. Rerolling is a method to gain a stronger character quicker, which enables you to advance in the game and achieve higher tiers.

Sets

Sets are groups of elements that can be put together in a variety of ways. They can be of different dimensions, have no elements, or contain one element. Upgrades to lower-level items can increase their defense and increase their competitiveness in terms of damage.

To determine if an item is worth upgrading, players must click the Upgrade button on their character screen. The item upgrader kit will be displayed with its characteristics, as well as the required items to upgrade it. For example, the No-mouth Face will require 1.1K Scrap Materials, 250 Enchanted Dust, and 5 Glowing Shards to upgrade. Players can also look up the upgrade requirements for specific items at the Cyrodiil Golden vendor or Leaderboard.

In general, weapons and armor are more valuable when fully updated. Upgrades to gold are recommended for weapons with spells or glyphs that damage weapons.
