Treatments For ADD - Drugs and Counselling

Treatment options for ADD include counseling and medication. Both are important to determine which is more effective.

People with classic ADD tend to be inattentive and unorganized, as well being hyperactive. They lack blood flow to the prefrontal cortex and basal Ganglia. They also have low dopamine levels. Treatment typically involves increasing the levels of dopamine.

Stimulants

Stimulants boost the body's systems. They are available legally as prescription drugs used to treat adhd, including amphetamines (Adder-all and Dexedrine) as well as methylphenidates (Concerta and Ritalin) and diet aids such as Didrex, Bontril and Fastin and also used illegally, often mixed with other substances, including cocaine and methcathinone (crack). They are available as liquids, pills, syrups or patches.

They boost concentration by increasing the levels of norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain synapses. They also reduce hyperactivity, impulsivity and help improve working memory. They are the most frequently prescribed medication for adults suffering from online adhd treatment. They can trigger side effects such as decreased appetite, insomnia and an increase in heart rate or blood pressure. They can interfere with some medications and medical conditions Therefore, it's crucial to discuss any concerns with your doctor.

Around 70 to 80 percent of people who take adhd treatment adults medication will experience a reduction in symptoms. Not all people respond the same way to the medication and the effects may not last for long.

Some people discover that stimulants don't work for them, or they can't tolerate the negative effects. If this is the case, doctors might prescribe non-stimulant drugs. They aren't as effective as stimulants but they can aid in improving attention, focus and control of impulses. Doctors often prescribe these with stimulants to increase their effectiveness.

Nonstimulant drugs take longer to start working and they don't react as quickly. They affect neurotransmitters differently from stimulants and don't increase dopamine levels in the brain. Examples include the atomoxetine (clonidine), guanfacine, and Clonidine. The most frequent adverse effect of these drugs is drowsiness. However, drowsiness can be reduced by increasing the dosage or taking them prior to the time of sleep. The drowsiness will subside in the following weeks after beginning treatment for adhd.

Antidepressants

Most antidepressants alter chemicals in the brain, called neurotransmitters. The drugs are classified based on the way they affect neurotransmitters. Each group contains somewhat different medications. These include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), atypical antidepressants, tricyclic antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).

A doctor might suggest you start taking one of these groups in order to reduce anxiety and depression symptoms of untreated adhd in adults. These medications may not offer immediate relief. It may take several weeks before you feel the full benefit. You and your doctor will determine which medicine is best for you. You may also take other medications or mix two antidepressants to enhance your treatment. This is referred to as an augmentation. The most commonly used augmentation drugs are aripiprazole, quetiapine and lithium.

Different antidepressants have different adverse effects. It's important to talk to your doctor about the side effects since some of them could interfere with your daily activities. These adverse effects may range from mild to severe and can depend on the type of antidepressant you're taking. You should also inform your doctor about any other medicines or herbal remedies you're taking, including herbal remedies and over-the-counter medications such as St. John's wort.

SSRIs have been found to cause less side effects than other antidepressants. SSRIs include fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil, Pexeva) and sertraline (Zoloft).

SNRIs increase the levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain. This is why SNRIs are thought to be more efficient than SSRIs. They also have a longer half-life than SSRIs and are less likely to interact with other drugs. SNRIs include duloxetine (Cymbalta), and venlafaxine, (Effexor).

Atypical antidepressants can be utilized to boost energy and make you feel more alert. They can be beneficial for those suffering from anxiety or insomnia. They include bupropion (Wellbutrin, Zyban) and mirtazapine (Remeron). These drugs can cause insomnia or jitteriness however they can be beneficial for those suffering from depression, ADHD, and anxiety. These drugs are also used to treat bulimia and to help smokers quit.

Cognitive behavioural therapy

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based treatment for mental health disorders. It is based upon the notion that thoughts and feelings are interconnected and can be changed. CBT is a measurable, short-term process that can teach you new ways to cope with stressors and bad habits. It can also be used to treat anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder.

CBT seeks to transform unhelpful thoughts and feelings into positive thoughts or behaviours. It is a combination of two therapies which are cognitive therapy and behaviour therapy. This kind of psychotherapy is usually short-term, and can be carried out in a group setting or on an individual basis. You will be taught a variety of techniques by a therapist and then you'll use them in your daily life. These techniques include: learning how to recognize negative automatic thoughts and meditative practices; and keeping journals.

A Therapist can also assist you in identifying negative thoughts that can lead you to adopting maladaptive behavior and help you learn to change these thoughts. They will also help you learn how to tackle issues in your daily life. CBT therapists will also guide you to establish SMART goals (specific goals that are measurable, achievable relevant, time-based, and relevant) to make it easier to track your progress.

While each type of CBT has its own approach, all cognitive behavior therapies are focused on identifying and modifying the underlying thoughts that contribute to emotional distress. Therapists employ a variety of techniques, but the majority are based on the concepts of operant and classical conditioning, which involves relating the effects of stimuli with the stimulus. During the treatment the trainer will give you a reward for completing tasks and punish you for not completing them.

During your first few sessions, you and your therapist will identify problematic behaviors and replace them by healthy ones. They may also assign homework to help you develop the techniques. Based on the nature of your condition you could require anywhere from 6-20 one-on-one sessions.

CBT is effective in treating a variety of conditions, including anxiety depression and post-traumatic disorder (PTSD). It also works for adults suffering from ADHD, which affects people as young as seven.

Counseling

Counselling can help people with many mental health issues, including schizophrenia, depression and bipolar disorder. It can also be used to talk about relationships, friendships and family issues - and also work-related issues.

A counsellor will pay attention to your issues and provide an objective view. They will be able identify patterns of behavior and suggest ways to alter them. They can also teach you strategies and coping skills for managing anxiety, stress, or depression. They can help you cope with major life changes such as divorce or the loss of a loved one. They can also help you learn how to cope with addictions or chronic illnesses.

Some counsellors charge fees for their services, and others are covered by Medicare rebates when you have a mental health care plan from your doctor.general-medical-council-logo.png
